Dec 09, 2016 Because since El Capitan the disk utility of macOS was change, if you running El Capitan and want to create bootable USB for Mac OS Sierra you can use Yosemite Disk utility for El Capitan just google it! This method also works to creating USB installer for El Capitan, Yosemite and Maverick, and the of Mac OS X as well. Sep 23, 2016 Open Disk Utility and drag InstallESD.dmg to the Disk Utility’s sidebar. Insert a blank DVD ( 8.5 GB, the max option, available for the media, single layer or double layer, + type preferably). When Disk Utility initializes it and makes it viewable in the input sources list of the sidebar, select InstallESD.dmg and click “Burn”.
Up until macOS Sierra I backed up my boot Drive via Disk Utility from the USB install stick and created a dmg file to an external storage. How can I do this with High Sierra and its apfs file system?
I tried to do so by checking the list view option at the top left corner of Disk Utility and deactivated the high Sierra volume (lowest one in tree size view). Then I highlighted the „Main“ ssd/Root device and created a dmg. This ends up as a 15gb image. Somewhere else I read that you have to create an image of the apfs container (one level below the „root device“). I did that and endend up with an image of 250gb (thats the size of my entire ssd). Which one of these images is the right one? I assume the bigger one but I dont get why they are that much different in size considering the „Root“ device should contain the lower containerpartition anyway.
Yes I know that there is carbon copy cloner and super duper to do the job but would like to use onboard methods as the way using Disk Utility was always reliable.
Thanks in advance and have a nice day!
Sep 25, 2017 Whatever your reasons, here is how to clean install macOS High Sierra. How to prepare your Mac for the clean install. Before you do anything, check that your Mac is able to run Apple's new operating system. Click Done and close Disk Utility. That entails creating a new user account, setting up date and time zone etc. Sep 27, 2017 First the disk will be deleted, then the entire installer will be copied to your disk. The process will take a while, but when it’s done you’ll have a bootable drive with the installer. Notice that the Utilities folder, offered by DiskMaker X, is not here. The command above is specifically for High Sierra (and a disk named “Installer.”). Jan 19, 2018 To install macOS or OS X from USB, you need to create a bootable install USB drive for Mac operating system. This tutorial will introduce you three ways to create bootable USB drive for macOS High Sierra, macOS Sierra, Mac OS X El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks and more. These advanced steps are primarily for system administrators and others who are familiar with the command line. You don't need a bootable installer to upgrade macOS or reinstall macOS, but it can be useful when you want to install on multiple computers without downloading the installer each time.
Find the appropriate download link in the upgrade instructions for each macOS version:
- macOS Catalina, macOS Mojave, and macOS High Sierra download directly to your Applications folder as an app named Install macOS Catalina, Install macOS Mojave, or Install macOS High Sierra. If the installer opens after downloading, quit it without continuing installation.
To get the required installer, download from a Mac that is using macOS Sierra 10.12.5 or later, or El Capitan 10.11.6. Enterprise administrators, please download from Apple, not a locally hosted software-update server.
- macOS Sierra downloads as a disk image that contains a file named InstallOS.pkg. Open this file and follow the onscreen instructions. It installs an app named Install macOS Sierra into your Applications folder.
- OS X El Capitan downloads as a disk image that contains a file named InstallMacOSX.pkg. Open this file and follow the onscreen instructions. It installs an app named Install OS X El Capitan into your Applications folder.
Use the 'createinstallmedia' command in Terminal
- Connect the USB flash drive or other volume that you're using for the bootable installer. Make sure that it has at least 12GB of available storage and is formatted as Mac OS Extended.
- Open Terminal, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
- Type or paste one of the following commands in Terminal. These assume that the installer is still in your Applications folder, and MyVolume is the name of the USB flash drive or other volume you're using. If it has a different name, replace
MyVolumein these commands with the name of your volume.
- Press Return after typing the command.
- When prompted, type your administrator password and press Return again. Terminal doesn't show any characters as you type your password.
- When prompted, type
Yto confirm that you want to erase the volume, then press Return. Terminal shows the progress as the bootable installer is created.
- When Terminal says that it's done, the volume will have the same name as the installer you downloaded, such as Install macOS Catalina. You can now quit Terminal and eject the volume.
* If your Mac is using macOS Sierra or earlier, include the
--applicationpath argument, similar to the way this argument is used in the commands for Sierra and El Capitan.
Use the bootable installer
After creating the bootable installer, follow these steps to use it:

- Plug the bootable installer into a compatible Mac.
- Use Startup Manager or Startup Disk preferences to select the bootable installer as the startup disk, then start up from it. Your Mac will start up to macOS Recovery.
Learn about selecting a startup disk, including what to do if your Mac doesn't start up from it.
- Choose your language, if prompted.
- A bootable installer doesn't download macOS from the Internet, but it does require the Internet to get information specific to your Mac model, such as firmware updates. If you need to connect to a Wi-Fi network, use the Wi-Fi menu in the menu bar.
- Select Install macOS (or Install OS X) from the Utilities window, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.
